a silver mt. zionIf you are already a fan of godspeed you black emperor!, I'm sure you know that A Silver Mt. Zion are a subset of the core group. If you're not, well, I'm sure this will come as yet another confusing layer of obscurity to you. The jolliest moment of their debut release, entitled (ready?): "He has left us alone but shafts of light sometimes grace the corners of our rooms", is the inscription on the CD itself, "destroy all dreamers with debt and depression". From there, the circling piano, guitar, contrebass, violin, proclamations against capitalism, and requisite field recordings of evangelical broadcasts variously knit and unravel two extended pieces of tragic chamber music which are dedicated to the pianist's dog Wanda who is dying of cancer. Fans of oppressed 20th century eastern European classical composers will no doubt be enthralled. Others, I'm sure, will be left wondering what's wrong with all the sad kids. Links of note:
