Attica Blues

I imagine that even if you have the good fortune to be living in the UK, you probably haven't heard of these folks, as until recently, they were on a rather obscure (but *outstanding*) independent UK label called Mo Wax. They sort of fall in the "trip hop" genre with which tend to be rather enamoured, but unlike the often desolate, gloomy, overbearing vibe spun by Portishead, Tricky, and Massive Attack, Attica Blues's take has way more soul and heartfelt blues. So take some blues, soul, jazz, rhythms, and Roba El Essawy's voice (which is a soulful instrument unto itself), and you've got the mix. If you're in the US, good luck finding a copy of their first album (self-titled) - Mo Wax isn't terribly well distributed, and you have to really dig around to find it on import. They have recently signed with Sony, and their new album should be more widely available shortly...
