DJ Dangermouse

File under "How to use copyright violation to launch your career". DJ Dangermouse caused a bit of a tizzy earlier this year when he released his "Grey Album" - cleverly remixing Jay-Z's "Black Album", creating the backing beats and samples taken only from the Beatles "White Album". Apparently, Jay-Z thought this was pretty cool, but EMI Records thought differently, and slapped him with a cease and desist notice. So anyhow, after many downloads from those file-sharing thingies that all the kids are nuts over these days, we see DJ Dangermouse hitting the road to ride this new-found wave of fame. Nobody else seems to have picked up on this, but DJ Dangermouse released a couple albums under an alter ego called Pelican City. His "Rhode Island" LP is probably one of my favorite things he's done - almost Portishead-like in its noirness.
