Back a few years ago, I saw Mr. Koala open for Money Mark (aka Mark Ramos Nishita, erstwhile Beastie Boys keyboardist). His set was my first real exposure to talented turntablism. As I learned that evening, a "turntablist" is much more than just a DJ - instead of simply playing records, a good turntablist uses the turntable as an instrument (oftentimes using at least 2 turntables), blending songs and sound samples in and out of each other, scratching the needle back and forth rhythmically to create entirely new sonic landscapes from the underlying records. Apparently, Kid Koala was at one time known as DJ Bagel, when he used to spin down the street from my friend Nicholas's university.
