Madredeus

Having not heard anything about Madredeus for several years, I'd thought that they might have disbanded. Apparently, this is not the case. Madredues are a group from Portugal who have taken the local traditional 'fado' musical genre and updated it (ever so slightly) to somewhat more modern instrumentation and style. The last time I saw them (several years ago), they had lost their cellist, which was a shame as I felt he added depth to the core acoustic guitars and keyboard. Regardless of the current instrumentation, for me, the central feature of Madredeus is vocalist Teresa Salgueiro - in the big file cabinet labeled "Things which can break your heart" there is a whole drawer dedicated to her voice, which can literally turn the air gelatin with emotion.
