Mr. Scruff

It's hard to listen to Mr. Scruff's album 'Keep it Unreal' without wondering if he suffers from a multiple personality disorder. Over the course of this really eclectic collection of dance-y tunes, he manages to touch (effectively) on swing, smoky soul complete with a sultry chanteuse, edgy drum n bass, hip hop, cheezy organ that sounds like a theme to a 70's gameshow - and strangest of all a song about a fishing expedition which contains the line: "There's a whale, there's a whale, there a whale fish, he cried - and the whale was in full view" which is sung over and over in this lilting chant that I now can't extract from my brain. Damn you, Mr. Scruff! His live sets run the gamut from electronic to latin jazz, from broken beat to funk - but it seams his unique element of whimsy is never far away. Be forewarned that he likes to play 5 hour sets. Arrange your sleep schedule accordingly - but I guarantee you'll leave the club smiling.
