Sharon Jones

Let me tell you a little story...I was standing in my favorite independent record shop in Houston (Sound Exchange, by the way) sometime last year, flipping through their box of old 45 rpm singles, when I came upon a dusty piece of vinyl recorded by one Sharon Jones. You see, I just had to buy it because I've got a friend in LA whose name is Sharron Jones, who surely would be amused to know that in an alternate life she has a recording career.

So I got home and dropped it on the turntable, and out popped the strains of deep soulful funk a la Aretha Franklin. With no date on the label, I just assumed it was vintage 1960s/70s fare. A quick search on the web located the record label - Desco Records - where I learned, much to my surprise, that Sharon Jones had recorded that song just three years ago. Real funk is alive and well in this day and age, thank you very much.

So here's my point. If you care about seriously heavy booty grooving funk and happen to live in the general vicinity of NYC, you really shouldn't miss this show.
