Spain

Spain is the brainchild of one Josh Haden, who is the son of jazz bassist Charlie Haden. Josh also has a sister, Petra who tends to run around playing violin on various people's albums (including Spain's first "The Blue Moods of Spain"). So anyhow, Spain does an amazingly good job of sounding exactly like their album cover looks. On the back of their first album is a photograph of a woman sitting in the darkness smoking a cigarette as the smoke curls about, illuminated by a pale blue light. Spain's music is a sparse, blusey affair, perfect for lounging around to, perhaps especially in the dark. While I love their music, their lyrics sometimes don't quite keep up - perhaps most notably on their seconds album, "She haunts my dreams". Their third album, "I Believe", comes out on May 15.
