St. Germain

From time to time, venerable jazz label Blue Note Records takes a break from their pure jazz roots and releases something that takes jazz and blends it into the pop culture flavor of the moment. Back in the early 90s, you may recall rap combo US3 and their stellar album 'Hand on the Torch', which appeared on Blue Note, blending coolly smooth raps and all manner of jazz samples from the label's back catalog, along with bits of live instrumentation. Today's pop culture flavor seems to be electronic beats in all their myriad genres...and in response, Blue Note has released French group St. Germain's 'Tourist', blending everything from thumping house, downtempo groove, and distantly dubby beats with mostly live sax, flute, trumpet, and all manner of percussion.
