Ui

So I intend to keep to my promise of keeping my discussion of Chicago-based instrumental bands to a minimum. But I didn't say anything about those based in the NYC / NJ area, now, did I? Ui has the wonderful property of having the shortest band name I have come across, and also one of the most fun to say aloud. Here - try it: "oooooh-eeeeee". There, I caught you smiling. Anyhow, I really enjoyed their 1997 release called 'Lifelike', which was quite Tortoise-like in its electronic-tinged jazzy meanderings - but with perhaps a bit more of a strong thump to the drumbeat. I should point out that two of the songs on the album were recorded at a studio called iiwii, located in Weehawken, NJ. Both 'iiwii' and 'Weehawken' are wonderful words, too. If you couldn't tell, I'm quite tired right now. I will leave you to wonder what in the world I'm talking about.
