Some call DJ Paul Oakenfold "Lord of the Trance". Oh, OK. Nobody calls him that. I just thought of that the other day, and it made me laugh, so I thought I would share. Even for those deeply in the know (I only scratch the surface), it's awfully difficult to keep up with all of the mutations of genres in the electronic / techno / dance world. Trance is yet another one to keep track of (but has been around longer than most). Perhaps the easiest way to describe it would be to think about the alternating bass drum / cymbal beat of Led Zeppelin's 'Bron-Y-Aur Stomp' (on Led Zeppelin III), but sped up quite a bit, and with tons of heavily repetitive, swooping electronic bloopy-bloopy noises. So back to Mr. Oakenfold - he's one of the better-known DJs that spins trance tunes these days (see also Sasha & Digweed).
